In Greek mythology, what is the Greek name for the hope kept in Pandora’s container?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, the Greek name for the hope kept in Pandora’s container is Elpis. Elpis is the personification of hope and is the final presence mentioned in Hesiod’s account of Pandora.

Hesiod’s Works and Days says that Pandora closed the container before Elpis escaped. The detail is important because it differs from the popular image of every evil flying out of the box. It also gives the story its enduring ambiguity: hope may be humanity’s remaining resource, or it may be something deliberately withheld.

Elpis is not the same figure as Nike, the goddess of victory, or Eris, the goddess associated with strife. Those names belong to other Greek mythological concepts and are sometimes confused with abstract personifications in retellings.
