In Greek mythology, what human gift did Prometheus give that led to Pandora’s creation?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Prometheus gave humans fire, and Zeus’s punishment for that act led to Pandora’s creation. The myth links fire with human advancement and with the divine retaliation that introduced new suffering into the world.

Prometheus is a Titan known for challenging Zeus on behalf of humanity. In Hesiod’s version, he steals fire after Zeus has withheld it and returns the vital resource to human beings. Zeus responds by arranging a punishment that affects both Prometheus and mankind. Prometheus is bound and tormented, while Pandora is created as a separate punishment for humanity.

Later authors and modern retellings often make Prometheus a straightforward champion of human progress. Hesiod’s story is more ambivalent: fire is valuable, but receiving it violates Zeus’s order and triggers consequences. Pandora’s episode therefore belongs to the same chain of myths as Prometheus’s theft rather than being an unrelated tale.
