In Greek mythology, what did Prometheus steal from the gods for humanity before the Pandora story?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Prometheus stole fire from the gods for humanity before the Pandora story.

Prometheus was a Titan who sided with humans in several myths. In the best-known version, he concealed fire in a stalk of fennel and carried it from the divine realm to mortals. Fire represented practical knowledge, technology, cooking, warmth, and the ability to work metals.

Zeus punished Prometheus for this theft by chaining him to a mountain, where an eagle repeatedly consumed his liver. The liver grew back, producing an endless cycle of torment until Heracles eventually freed him in later mythic tradition.

Pandora follows as part of Zeus’s punishment of humanity. The two stories are therefore linked, but they are not the same episode: Prometheus steals fire, while Pandora’s opening of the jar releases troubles. Some retellings combine details or call Pandora Prometheus’s wife, although Hesiod makes her the wife of Epimetheus.
