In Greek mythology, Pandora was created as punishment for whose gift of fire to humans?

The story behind the answer

In Greek mythology, Pandora was created as punishment for Prometheus’s gift of fire to humans.

Prometheus was a Titan who sided with humanity in its conflict with Zeus. After stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humans, he became the focus of Zeus’s anger. Pandora’s arrival is presented in Hesiod as part of the consequences of that act.

The punishment operates on two levels. Zeus orders Prometheus to suffer personally, while humanity receives Pandora and the evils released from her vessel. The story therefore explains both Prometheus’s suffering and the appearance of hardship in human life.

Pandora was not created by Prometheus, and she is not the person who steals fire. Those roles belong to different characters in the myth. Hesiod’s narrative links them through cause and consequence: Prometheus’s defiance comes first, and Pandora’s creation follows as Zeus’s response.
