In 'Goodfellas', who plays the character Henry Hill?

The story behind the answer

In Goodfellas, Ray Liotta plays Henry Hill. Liotta's performance follows Hill from his teenage fascination with organized crime through his rise inside a Lucchese crime-family associates' circle and his eventual cooperation with the authorities.

Goodfellas, released in 1990, was directed by Martin Scorsese and adapted from Nicholas Pileggi's nonfiction book Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family. The film's narration and perspective are largely tied to Henry, allowing viewers to experience the excitement, violence, paranoia, and banality of mob life through his eyes.

Henry Hill was a real person of Irish and Sicilian heritage who became involved with organized crime in Brooklyn. He later entered the Witness Protection Program. The film fictionalizes and compresses parts of his life, but its main criminal episodes draw on Pileggi's reporting and Hill's experiences.

Liotta prepared by listening to FBI recordings of Hill to study his voice and mannerisms. Robert De Niro plays Jimmy Conway, a fictionalized version of Jimmy Burke, while Joe Pesci plays Tommy DeVito, a character partly inspired by mobster Thomas DeSimone. Those roles are sometimes mistaken for Henry because they are among the film's most memorable gangsters.
