In Germany, a red-bordered circular sign showing two cars prohibits overtaking.
The German sign uses a red car beside a black car to show that passing other motor vehicles is forbidden on the section of road covered by the restriction. Drivers must remain behind the vehicle ahead unless the restriction ends or another sign changes the rule.
This sign is different from a no-entry sign, which uses a horizontal white bar, and from a no-parking sign, which uses a blue field with a red border and slash. A separate speed-limit sign displays a number inside the red circle.
German road signs follow a systematic visual language in which red circular signs generally impose prohibitions. The overtaking restriction is commonly used where curves, hills, junctions, or other conditions make passing dangerous.
