A shaved wooden tree
Answer
A shaved wooden tree
In Georgian Christmas tradition, a chichilaki is a shaved wooden tree decoration.
Chichilaki are made by shaving a straight branch of hazelnut or walnut wood into fine curled strips. The resulting pale, feathery shape resembles a small tree and is traditionally decorated with fruit, berries, or sweets.
The decoration is especially associated with Christmas and New Year celebrations in Georgia. Its light color and curled form have led to comparisons with the beard of Saint Basil, whose feast is celebrated in Georgia on 14 January according to the traditional calendar.
Chichilaki are not the same as European evergreen Christmas trees. In some Georgian customs, the decoration is burned after the holiday period, symbolically carrying away the previous year's troubles.
