In Genesis's account of Noah's Ark, Noah is commanded by God to build it.
The instruction appears in Genesis chapters 6–9, where Noah is presented as a righteous man living in a violent world. God warns him of a coming flood and gives detailed instructions for constructing a large vessel for Noah, his family, and selected animals.
The story names Noah's wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and the sons' wives as those who enter the Ark. This makes Noah the central human figure, not merely the vessel's captain or discoverer.
Noah is also associated with the covenant made after the flood. In the biblical narrative, God promises not to destroy all living creatures with a flood again and establishes the rainbow as its sign. The Quran also tells a flood story featuring Noah, but its details and presentation differ from Genesis. The answer is therefore specific to Genesis's account of Noah's Ark.
