In Genesis, what wood was Noah’s Ark instructed to be made from?

Genesis says Noah’s Ark was to be made from gopher wood.

The instruction appears in Genesis 6:14, where God tells Noah to build the ark from “gopher wood” and coat it with pitch inside and out. “Gopher” is a transliteration rather than a clearly identified modern tree species, so its exact botanical meaning remains uncertain.

Common proposals have included cypress and other durable conifers, but the biblical text does not identify the wood with a modern species. Because of that uncertainty, “gopher wood” is the most precise answer to the question, while naming cypress as though it were certain goes beyond the text.

The ark’s other stated construction details include multiple decks, rooms, a roof, and a single door. Genesis gives its dimensions in cubits, but it does not provide a surviving technical description of the timber or construction tools.
