In Genesis, what were the Ark’s dimensions in cubits, starting with its length?

The story behind the answer

Genesis gives Noah’s Ark dimensions as 300 by 50 by 30 cubits: length, width, and height.

The measurements appear in Genesis 6:15 as part of God’s instructions for constructing the vessel. The text uses the ancient unit called a cubit, generally associated with the length from an adult’s elbow to the tip of the middle finger. Because cubit standards varied, converting the ark into modern metres or feet produces estimates rather than one universally certain size.

Using a common cubit of about 45 centimetres would make the ark roughly 135 metres long, 23 metres wide, and 14 metres high. Other proposed cubit lengths change those estimates slightly.

The proportions are often discussed because the vessel is much longer than it is wide or high. Genesis focuses on the measurements as part of a divine construction command, while later literalist and engineering discussions have explored how such a hull might behave on water.
