In Genesis, what length was specified for Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark was specified as 300 cubits long.

Genesis 6:15 gives the ark’s three principal measurements: 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width, and 30 cubits in height. A cubit was an ancient unit based broadly on the length of a forearm, so its exact modern equivalent is uncertain. Common estimates place the ark’s length around 135 metres, but converting the biblical measurement into metres depends on which cubit standard is used.

The dimensions create a long, relatively narrow vessel. The text does not describe it as a fast ship or give it a pointed bow, mast, or steering equipment. Its stated purpose was to preserve life during the flood, not to travel under human navigation.

Modern illustrations often make the ark resemble a conventional boat. Genesis instead emphasizes its measurements, compartments, coating, and single side door. The 300-cubit length is therefore a textual dimension, not a measurement of any surviving archaeological object.
