In Genesis, how many people are said to have been aboard Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis says eight people were aboard Noah’s Ark: Noah, his wife, his three sons, and the sons’ wives.

The account in Genesis 7:7 identifies Noah, his wife, his sons, and their wives as entering the ark before the flood. This makes a total of eight humans, separate from the animals preserved aboard the vessel.

The number is sometimes confused with the number of Noah’s sons, which was three, or with later traditions that add unnamed helpers. The biblical text itself gives the household total rather than naming all eight individuals.

The same figure appears in the New Testament, where 1 Peter 3:20 refers to “eight souls” being saved through water. Thus, eight is the standard answer for the human passengers in the Genesis account.
