In Genesis, at what age did Noah enter the ark during the flood?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah was 600 years old when he entered the ark during the flood.

Genesis 7:6 introduces the flood by stating that Noah was 600 years old when the waters came upon the earth. The same chapter places Noah, his sons, his wife, and his sons' wives inside the ark before the waters rose. The age is therefore a specific chronological detail in the biblical account, not an estimate created by later retellings.

Genesis presents Noah as having three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—who entered the ark with him. Their presence connects the flood story to the genealogies that follow in Genesis, especially the account of nations descended from Noah's family.

A common mix-up is Noah's total lifespan. Genesis 9:29 says he died at 950 years old, 350 years after the flood. The figure 600 refers to his age at the flood, while 950 refers to his age at death. These numbers belong to different moments in the story.
