In Fon mythology, Legba is the messenger and trickster god.
Legba belongs to the Vodun religious world of the Fon people, especially in present-day Benin. He is associated with communication, thresholds, crossroads, and the passage between humans and the divine. As a messenger, he helps connect people with other deities; as a trickster, he can disrupt expectations and expose human weaknesses.
Legba is also linked to creation traditions involving Mawu and the cosmic serpent Aido Hwedo. In some accounts, Mawu works with Legba to shape living beings and their destinies. This makes him more than a simple prankster: his disruptive role can explain change, uncertainty, and the difficulty of altering one's fate.
A common mix-up is identifying Legba with Eshu, the Yoruba trickster deity, or with Satan because some Christian missionaries portrayed him negatively. Those figures may be compared across traditions, but they are not the same deity. Mawu, meanwhile, is a major Fon creator deity, not the messenger-trickster asked for here.
