In Fon mythology, Legba is the trickster god who guards crossroads and speaks all languages.
Legba is a mediator and threshold figure in the Vodun traditions of the Fon people of Benin and neighboring parts of West Africa. Because he can communicate across divine and human realms, worshippers traditionally address him before approaching other spirits. His command of every language makes him an essential interpreter and messenger.
The crossroads symbolize choice, transition, and contact between worlds. Legba’s role there is therefore more than geographic: he controls access, opens or blocks pathways, and can redirect plans through trickery. Like many trickster figures, he is not simply malicious; his unpredictability exposes pride, tests judgment, and creates change.
Legba is often confused with Eshu or Esu, a related Yoruba crossroads and messenger deity. The figures share important functions, but they belong to distinct religious traditions and are not interchangeable in every context. In Haitian Vodou and related diasporic traditions, Fon Legba has a major counterpart in Papa Legba, the gatekeeper invoked at the start of ceremonies.
