In Fon mythology, Lisa is the sun god and the male counterpart of Mawu.
Mawu and Lisa form a complementary divine pair in Fon and wider Gbe religious traditions. Mawu is generally associated with the moon, coolness, and the feminine aspect of creation, while Lisa is associated with the sun, heat, skill, and the masculine aspect. Together, they represent cosmic balance and are often treated as a joined power called Mawu-Lisa.
In creation traditions, Mawu is credited with creating human beings from clay, while Lisa helps teach people the knowledge and practical skills needed to build civilization. Their relationship is therefore more than a simple sun-and-moon pairing: it expresses the cooperation of contrasting forces that sustain the world.
Lisa is sometimes confused with Gu, a deity associated with iron, tools, and war, or with Dan, the cosmic serpent linked with Aido Hwedo. Those figures have important roles in Fon cosmology, but neither is the male solar counterpart of Mawu. Mawu-Lisa was especially important in the religious world of the historic Dahomey kingdom.
