In Final Fantasy X, the sport played with a blitzball is called Blitzball.
Blitzball is a fictional underwater team sport and one of Spira’s most important forms of entertainment. Matches take place inside a large sphere of suspended water, where players swim, pass, tackle opponents, and attempt to throw the ball into the opposing goal. The standard game uses six players per team and consists of two five-minute halves.
The sport is closely tied to the story. Tidus, the protagonist, is a famous blitzball player from Zanarkand, and his athletic identity helps connect him to both the opening sequence and the world he later enters. Wakka, one of Yuna’s guardians, is captain of the Besaid Aurochs and uses a blitzball as his weapon in battle.
Blitzball is introduced early and is mandatory during one story sequence, although later matches are optional. It is often confused with Final Fantasy’s other minigames, including Sphere Break from Final Fantasy X-2 and the card games Triple Triad and Tetra Master. Blitzball also appears in Final Fantasy X-2, where its gameplay is redesigned as a team-management activity.
