In Final Fantasy VII, Barret Wallace leads the eco-terrorist group AVALANCHE.
AVALANCHE opposes Shinra Electric Power Company, whose Mako reactors extract the Planet's life energy and power Midgar. Barret recruits Cloud Strife as a mercenary for the group's opening operation against a reactor, making the environmental conflict central to the game's beginning.
The name can cause confusion because AVALANCHE existed before Barret's branch. In the original game's backstory, an earlier organization operated independently, while Barret later formed and led the Midgar cell after the destruction of Corel. The Final Fantasy VII Compilation and remake material expand that distinction.
Barret's motivations also develop beyond simple revenge. Shinra's actions devastated his hometown and cost him an arm, which he replaced with a gun arm. As the adventure continues, his concern for the Planet becomes closely tied to protecting his adopted daughter Marlene and building a safer future.
