In 'Eye of the Beholder,' what is the doctor's surname?

Doctor Bernardi is the physician overseeing Janet Tyler’s eleventh treatment, the last procedure allowed by the State. He works in the shadowy hospital room where Janet’s face is hidden beneath extensive bandages. Although the staff initially speak about her appearance with disgust, Bernardi becomes increasingly uncomfortable with the society’s enforced definition of beauty.

His objections are dangerous because the State treats criticism of its standards as treason. Bernardi questions why anyone should be judged by outward appearance, making him one of the episode’s few characters to recognize the moral problem before the final revelation. He still participates in the treatment, but his sympathy distinguishes him from the nurses and the authoritarian system surrounding them.

William D. Gordon played Bernardi in the 1960 original. The character also appears in the 2002 revival, where Reggie Hayes plays him. That remake can create a memory trap for viewers, since the episode’s story, character names, and central twist were retained while the cast and production changed.
