In Egyptian mythology, Osiris was murdered by his brother Set and became lord of the underworld.
Osiris was an ancient Egyptian god of the dead, resurrection, fertility, vegetation, and the afterlife. In the best-known myth, Set trapped Osiris in a coffin and killed him; later traditions describe Set dismembering his body. Isis, Osiris’s sister and wife, recovered and reassembled the remains, allowing Osiris to live on as ruler of the dead.
The story connected Osiris with the annual cycle of the Nile, the growth of crops, and the hope of renewed life after death. Egyptians who died were symbolically associated with him, especially pharaohs, whose afterlife was linked to Osiris’s resurrection.
A common mix-up is assigning the underworld’s judgment to Anubis. Anubis guided and embalmed the dead and helped conduct funerary rites, while Osiris was the sovereign who presided over the realm of the dead. Horus, Osiris’s son, became the central avenger of his murder.
