In Doctor Who's 2010 episode “The Pandorica Opens,” Stonehenge hides the entrance to the Pandorica.
The episode is the first part of the fifth series' two-part finale, written by Steven Moffat and directed by Toby Haynes. The Doctor and his companions travel to Roman-era Britain after receiving a mysterious message connected with the Pandorica, an apparently impenetrable prison said to contain the universe's most feared prisoner.
The story places the monument at the center of a science-fiction mystery. Stonehenge's real prehistoric stones are used as the visible gateway to an underground chamber, linking a familiar archaeological site with the episode's time-travel plot. The Pandorica is eventually revealed to be far more important than the characters first assume.
The episode title can cause confusion because “Pandorica” resembles “Pandora's box.” In Doctor Who, however, the Pandorica is a fictional prison rather than the container from Greek mythology. The connection is thematic: both objects conceal a dangerous mystery whose opening changes the world.
