In Dmitry Glukhovsky's dystopian novel Metro 2033, which Moscow Metro station is the protagonist's home?

The story behind the answer

In Dmitry Glukhovsky's dystopian novel Metro 2033, the protagonist's home station is VDNKh.

Artyom lives at VDNKh, one of the underground stations where survivors shelter after a catastrophic war makes Moscow's surface dangerous. The station is threatened by mysterious creatures known as the Dark Ones, prompting Artyom to undertake a journey through the Metro system to seek help.

VDNKh is based on a real Moscow Metro station. Its name derives from the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy, a major Soviet exhibition complex in Moscow. In the novel, the station functions as both Artyom's community and the starting point for his dangerous mission.

Readers may confuse VDNKh with Polis, the Metro's intellectual and political center. Polis is a major destination in the story, but it is not Artyom's home station. The novel was first developed online before appearing in book form in 2005.
