In Dan Simmons’ Hyperion Cantos, the terrifying creature that appears on the planet Hyperion is the Shrike. It is a mysterious, seemingly half-organic and half-mechanical being associated with the Time Tombs and the desert region around them.
The Shrike is described as a four-armed figure covered with blades, thorns, razor wire, and other cutting surfaces. Its fingers resemble scalpels, and its feet have long curved blades. The creature can manipulate time, making it appear impossibly fast and allowing it to seem almost supernatural to the humans who encounter it.
The Shrike is feared, worshipped, and hated by different groups, especially the Church of the Final Atonement, whose followers form the Shrike Cult. Its name also recalls the real-life shrike bird, which is known for impaling prey on thorns or sharp branches. The Bear, Tiger, and Lion are not the canonical creature of Hyperion; the Shrike is the defining monster of Simmons’ setting.
