In Cuba, what is a quinceañera celebration commonly called?

The story behind the answer

In Cuba, a quinceañera celebration is commonly called quinces.

The word is the plural form of quince, Spanish for “fifteen,” and refers to the celebration rather than only to the girl reaching the milestone. Cuban quinces share the broader quinceañera tradition of marking a girl’s fifteenth birthday with family, formal clothing, music, dancing, and a large meal or party.

The name can vary across Spanish-speaking communities. Quinceañera is widely used for the celebrant and for the event, while fiesta de quince años and fiesta de quince are also common expressions. In Cuba, however, quinces is a distinctive local term. The celebration’s details are not identical everywhere: religious services, court members, choreographed dances, photography, and symbolic gifts depend on family, region, and religious background.

Quinces should not be confused with a wedding. Although the event can include formal attire and ceremonial traditions, its central purpose is a birthday transition associated with age fifteen.
