In 'Coriolanus', what is the name of the Volscian general who becomes Coriolanus's ally?
Answer
Tullus Aufidius
Answer
Tullus Aufidius
In “Coriolanus,” the Volscian general who becomes Coriolanus’s ally is Tullus Aufidius.
Aufidius is Coriolanus’s principal military rival at the beginning of the play. He commands the Volsci, an Italian people repeatedly at war with Rome, while Caius Marcius—later named Coriolanus—wins fame fighting against them. Their rivalry is personal as well as political: each regards the other as the one opponent worthy of respect.
After Coriolanus is expelled from Rome because of his hostility toward the plebeians, he seeks refuge with Aufidius. The former enemies join forces, and together they lead the Volscian army against Rome. Their campaign is so successful that the army reaches the outskirts of the city, creating the play’s central crisis.
The alliance eventually collapses. Coriolanus agrees to withdraw after his mother, Veturia, his wife, Virgilia, and other Roman women plead with him. Aufidius sees the withdrawal as both a military failure and a betrayal. He helps turn the Volsci against Coriolanus, who is ultimately killed.
The character is based on the ancient Volscian leader Attius Tullius, whom Plutarch calls Tullus Aufidius. Menenius, Brutus and Sicinius are Roman characters, not Volscian generals.
