In Brazilian tradition, a baby shower is commonly called chá de bebê.
The phrase literally means “baby tea,” following the Portuguese convention of naming social gatherings around tea or a similar hosted celebration. In practice, chá de bebê is a gathering where relatives and friends celebrate an expected child and may give useful gifts such as clothing, diapers, and nursery supplies.
The name should not be confused with chá de panela, a Brazilian pre-wedding kitchen-shower tradition. Nor is it the same as a batizado, which is a baptism held after birth in families that observe that religious ceremony.
Brazilian celebrations vary by family and region. Some are organized primarily as gift parties, while others emphasize food, games, decorations, and advice for the parents. The shared feature is the prenatal celebration of the coming baby.
