Chá de fraldas is the Brazilian baby-shower custom centered on guests bringing diapers instead of ordinary presents.
The Portuguese phrase means “diaper tea.” It is a practical variation of the broader chá de bebê, or baby shower, in which friends and relatives gather before a child’s birth and provide useful supplies. Diapers are especially suitable because newborns require many of them and babies quickly move through sizes.
The exact format depends on the family. Hosts may request disposable or cloth diapers, specify sizes, and combine the practical gift exchange with food, games, decorations, and advice for the parents. Some celebrations are informal, while others resemble a conventional registry-based shower.
Chá de fraldas should not be confused with chá revelação, which is a party focused on revealing the expected sex of the baby. Both names occur in Brazilian social life, but they describe different purposes.
