In Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', what is the name of the asylum doctor?

The story behind the answer

In Bram Stoker's Dracula, the asylum doctor is Dr. Seward, also known as John “Jack” Seward. He runs an asylum near Carfax, Count Dracula's English residence.

Seward is especially important because one of his patients is Renfield, whose disturbing obsession with consuming living creatures becomes an early clue to the supernatural events surrounding Dracula. Seward records his interviews and observations on a phonograph, giving the novel several documentary-style passages.

He is also one of Lucy Westenra's suitors. After Lucy falls mysteriously ill, Seward calls on his former teacher, Professor Abraham Van Helsing, for help. Their investigation reveals that Lucy is being attacked by a vampire. Seward later joins the group determined to destroy Dracula.

A common mix-up comes from adaptations. Films and stage versions sometimes make Seward Mina or Lucy's father, or give him a larger role than he has in the book. In the original 1897 novel, however, he is the asylum administrator, psychiatrist, and an important narrator.
