In baseball, who was the Yankees' legendary #7?

The Yankees’ legendary number 7 was Mickey Mantle.

Mantle played his entire 18-season Major League Baseball career with the New York Yankees, from 1951 through 1968. Primarily a center fielder and switch-hitter, he became one of baseball’s defining stars, combining exceptional speed with power from both sides of the plate.

He won three American League Most Valuable Player Awards and captured the Triple Crown in 1956 by leading the league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in. Mantle also helped the Yankees win seven World Series championships and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.

The Yankees retired his number 7 on June 8, 1969, during Mickey Mantle Day at Yankee Stadium. That retirement is why “number 7” is an especially direct clue: no later Yankee can officially wear it. Mantle’s famous teammates included Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, and Whitey Ford.
