In Barbadian cuisine, the popular baked pasta dish and side dish is macaroni pie.
Barbadian macaroni pie is a rich, oven-baked version of macaroni and cheese. Cooked macaroni is combined with cheese and a seasoned sauce, then baked until the top is browned. It is commonly served alongside meats, fish, and other parts of a traditional Bajan meal.
The dish is especially associated with Barbados, where it is a familiar home-cooked food and a common presence at gatherings. Although macaroni and cheese is known internationally, Barbadian macaroni pie is distinguished by its firm baked texture and local seasoning traditions rather than being a simple stovetop preparation.
“Bajan” means Barbadian, so the terms Bajan macaroni pie and Barbadian macaroni pie refer to the same dish. It should not be confused with sweet pies made from breadfruit, corn, or cassava, which are separate Caribbean preparations.
