The Na’vi are indigenous to the fictional moon Pandora in Avatar.
The Na’vi are the blue, humanoid inhabitants of Pandora in James Cameron’s 2009 science-fiction film. They live in clans across Pandora’s varied environments and maintain a spiritual and biological relationship with the moon’s living systems. The story follows human attempts to extract valuable resources from Pandora and the resulting conflict with Na’vi communities.
The film’s central human character, Jake Sully, uses an engineered Na’vi-human body called an avatar to interact with the species and their world. This term is separate from the name of the species itself: “avatar” refers to the remotely operated biological body, while “Na’vi” identifies Pandora’s native people.
The Na’vi were created for the film’s fictional setting and are not the same as any real-world human population. Their language was developed for the production by linguist Paul Frommer, adding detail to the film’s invented culture and world.
