Unobtanium is the valuable mineral motivating the human mining operation on Pandora in Avatar.
In James Cameron’s 2009 film, unobtanium is a rare material found on Pandora. Its extremely high value drives the Resources Development Administration, or RDA, to seek deposits beneath territory inhabited by the Na’vi. The resource gives the human expedition its economic purpose and intensifies the conflict over land.
The word “unobtanium” is a long-established engineering joke for a hypothetical material that is difficult or impossible to obtain. Avatar uses the term as the name of a fictional mineral, giving the joke a concrete role in the plot.
Unobtanium is not the same as the biological network connecting Pandora’s life. The mineral is a commercial resource, while the moon’s ecological and spiritual systems are represented through places and entities such as the Tree of Souls.
