In Avatar, the language created for the Na’vi people of Pandora is Na’vi.
Linguist Paul Frommer developed Na’vi for James Cameron’s 2009 science-fiction film Avatar. Cameron wanted the Na’vi to have a convincing language rather than a few improvised phrases, so Frommer designed its sounds, grammar, and vocabulary for the fictional culture and setting.
Na’vi is a constructed language, often called a conlang. It was created specifically for the Avatar universe and is distinct from English and the other human languages heard in the film. The language’s sound system and grammar were designed to be learnable by actors while still feeling unlike ordinary English speech.
Na’vi is sometimes confused with the name of the species or with Pandora itself. Na’vi refers both to the fictional people and, in this context, to their language; Pandora is the moon on which much of Avatar takes place.
