In Avatar, what is the name of the giant moon where Pandora’s story takes place?

The story behind the answer

In Avatar, Pandora is the giant moon where the story takes place.

James Cameron’s Avatar is set primarily on Pandora, a habitable moon in the Alpha Centauri star system. The film depicts Pandora as home to the Na’vi, an indigenous humanoid species whose society is deeply connected to the moon’s ecosystems. Humans travel there to mine unobtanium and conduct scientific research.

Pandora is not a planet in the film’s fictional astronomy. It orbits the gas giant Polyphemus, which is located in the Alpha Centauri system. This is separate from the Greek mythological figure Pandora and from real astronomical objects named after her.

The film’s setting became widely associated with floating mountains, bioluminescent forests, and the neural bond between Na’vi and other organisms. Avatar: The Way of Water expands the setting to Pandora’s oceans and introduces the reef-dwelling Metkayina clan, but the moon remains the central world of the franchise.
