In Avatar, Pandora is the name of a moon.
Pandora is the habitable moon where most of James Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar takes place. It orbits the fictional gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system and is home to the Na’vi, the film’s tall blue humanoid inhabitants.
The film’s Pandora is fictional and should not be confused with the Pandora of Greek mythology. Cameron chose the mythological name because the moon contains extraordinary natural wealth and beauty while also becoming the setting for conflict over resources and colonial exploitation.
Pandora is often casually called a planet because it is the main world shown on screen. Astronomically, however, its stated relationship with Polyphemus makes it a moon, or natural satellite. The distinction is part of the film’s invented planetary system.
