In astronomy, Saturn has a small moon named Pandora.
Pandora is an inner moon of Saturn and a shepherd satellite associated with the planet’s narrow F ring. It was discovered in 1980 by Voyager 1 images, along with several other Saturnian moons revealed by the spacecraft encounters. Its name comes from Pandora in Greek mythology.
Pandora’s orbit helps distinguish it from the similarly named asteroid 55 Pandora. The moon is irregularly shaped and relatively small, with a mean diameter of roughly 81 kilometres. It travels outside the F ring, while the moon Prometheus orbits inside it; their gravitational influence helps confine and shape the ring. The names create a mythological pairing, but the objects are separate from the figures in the ancient story.
