In astronomy, the moon discovered orbiting Saturn in 1980 and named after Pandora is Pandora.
Pandora is a small inner moon of Saturn and acts as an outer shepherd satellite of Saturn’s narrow F ring. Voyager 1 images led to its discovery in October 1980, while the spacecraft was studying the Saturn system. The moon was later named Pandora after the figure from Greek mythology.
Pandora is often discussed alongside Prometheus, another small Saturnian moon that shepherds the F ring from the inner side. Their gravitational effects help confine and shape the ring, although the system is dynamically complex. Pandora should also be distinguished from the asteroid 55 Pandora and from fictional uses of the name.
