In Assassin's Creed, Masyaf serves as Altaïr's main base in 1191. The mountain settlement is the headquarters of the Assassin Brotherhood, led by Al Mualim, and it functions as the game's central hub.
Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad returns to Masyaf after missions in Damascus, Acre, and Jerusalem. From there, Al Mualim assigns targets and provides access to the Brotherhood's training and information networks. The settlement's elevated position also gives it a distinctive defensive role in the story.
Masyaf is based on a real Syrian town associated with the historical Nizari Ismaili community. The game, however, uses fictionalized characters and events alongside real medieval locations. Players sometimes confuse Masyaf with the three cities where most assassination investigations occur, but those cities are mission destinations rather than Altaïr's home base.
