In Assassin's Creed, which Assassin is the main playable character in the 1191 Levant setting?

The story behind the answer

Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad is the main playable character in Assassin's Creed's 1191 Levant setting.

Altaïr is introduced as a highly ranked Assassin whose arrogance leads to his demotion after a failed mission. He must recover his status by carrying out assignments in cities including Masyaf, Acre, Damascus, and Jerusalem.

The game presents Altaïr's story through Desmond Miles's genetic memories, a framing device that became central to the series. Altaïr's mentor is Al Mualim, the leader of the Assassin bureau at Masyaf.

Altaïr is sometimes confused with Ezio Auditore, the protagonist of the next major story arc. Ezio's adventures take place mainly in Renaissance Italy and begin more than two centuries after Altaïr's campaign.
