In Assassin’s Creed, the Animus is the device used to view ancestral memories.
The Animus allows a modern subject to experience genetic memories inherited from ancestors. In the first game, Desmond Miles is forced to use it by Abstergo Industries, whose researchers want access to memories connected to the Assassins and Templars. The machine turns historical exploration into the series’ central science-fiction framework.
The Animus is not a time machine. It does not physically send a person into the past; instead, it reconstructs memories through a subject’s genetic lineage. This distinction explains why the player can explore historical events while the story also returns to a modern setting.
Later games introduce different Animus models and related systems, including the Helix entertainment platform. The Helix is a separate fictional product, while the Animus remains the underlying memory technology most closely associated with the franchise.
