In Assassin's Creed Origins, which ancient civilization provides the main setting for Bayek's story?

The story behind the answer

Ancient Egypt provides the main setting for Bayek's story in Assassin's Creed Origins.

The game takes place in the first century BCE, during the final period of Ptolemaic Egypt. Bayek of Siwa is a Medjay, a local protector whose investigation into a personal tragedy leads him into a much larger political and secret conflict. Locations include the Siwa Oasis, Alexandria, Memphis, and the Nile Delta.

Origins also depicts historical figures such as Cleopatra VII and Julius Caesar. Its story presents the formation of the Hidden Ones, the organization that later develops into the Assassin Brotherhood. Although Roman power is increasingly important in the plot, the game's landscapes, institutions, and cultural setting are principally Egyptian. Released in 2017, Origins also introduced role-playing features, such as levels, gear statistics, and a more expansive desert world.
