The main playable character in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is the Welsh pirate Edward Kenway.
Edward begins the story as a privateer and pirate seeking wealth and status during the Golden Age of Piracy. After becoming entangled with an Assassin, he acquires an identity that draws him into the conflict between the Assassins and Templars. His ambitions initially differ from the Brotherhood's ideals, creating the game's central character arc.
The adventure takes place across the Caribbean, with major locations including Havana, Nassau, and Kingston. Edward commands a ship, explores islands, raids vessels, and meets historical pirates such as Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and Anne Bonny.
Edward is also the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton, the protagonist of Assassin's Creed III. This family connection links Black Flag to the broader Kenway saga. The game is often remembered for its naval exploration, but Edward's gradual change is equally important to its narrative.
