In Arthurian legend, which knight is the father of Sir Galahad?

The story behind the answer

In Arthurian legend, Sir Lancelot is the father of Sir Galahad.

Galahad is introduced in many medieval romances as the son of Lancelot and Elaine of Corbenic. He is raised away from the court and later arrives among King Arthur’s knights. His lineage gives him exceptional status, but his reputation for purity and spiritual worth is what makes him the principal Grail achiever in many versions of the legend.

The relationship also creates an important contrast. Lancelot is usually portrayed as the greatest worldly knight, yet his love for Guinevere and resulting sin prevent him from fully attaining the Grail. Galahad, by contrast, is often presented as morally spotless, allowing him to complete the quest.

Different Arthurian texts vary in their details, including Elaine’s identity and the precise Grail episodes. Nevertheless, the father-son relationship between Lancelot and Galahad is a stable feature of the major medieval Grail tradition.
