In Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel The Hound of the Baskervilles, in which year did the story begin serialization in The Strand Magazine?

The story behind the answer

Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles began serialization in The Strand Magazine in 1901.

The novel appeared in nine monthly parts, beginning in August 1901 and concluding in April 1902. George Newnes’s magazine illustrated the installments, helping make the return of Sherlock Holmes a major publishing event.

Doyle had apparently killed Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls in “The Final Problem,” published in 1893. The Hound of the Baskervilles therefore occupies an unusual place in the canon: its events are set before Holmes’s apparent death, even though readers encountered the novel after that story.

A common mix-up is to identify 1902 as the publication year. The complete book edition appeared in 1902, but serialization started the previous year. The novel is also sometimes treated as a straightforward supernatural mystery, although Holmes ultimately supplies a rational explanation for the terrifying hound.
