In Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel Brave New World, what is the surname of the protagonist Bernard?

The story behind the answer

In Aldous Huxley's dystopian novel Brave New World, the protagonist Bernard's surname is Marx.

Bernard Marx is an Alpha-Plus psychologist who works at the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre. Although he belongs to the highest social caste, he feels physically and socially out of place among the World State's citizens. His surname echoes Karl Marx, though Bernard is not a political revolutionary in the conventional sense.

Bernard's dissatisfaction helps introduce readers to the novel's controlled society, where people are biologically engineered, conditioned from childhood, and encouraged to use soma. His relationship with Lenina Crowne and his encounter with John the Savage drive much of the middle section.

A common mix-up is confusing Bernard Marx with Helmholtz Watson. Helmholtz is Bernard's friend, an emotionally confident writer whose dissatisfaction comes from feeling that official language lacks depth. Both question the World State, but they are separate characters.
