In Aladdin, Jafar is the villain who seeks the magic lamp.
Jafar is Agrabah’s grand vizier and the film’s main antagonist. He wants the lamp because it contains the Genie, whose wishes could give him extraordinary power. Unable to enter the Cave of Wonders himself, Jafar manipulates Aladdin into retrieving it by identifying him as the “diamond in the rough.”
Jafar is not the same character as Iago, his scheming parrot assistant. The Sultan is Agrabah’s ruler, while Razoul is a palace guard captain. Those names are therefore plausible distractors, but only Jafar drives the lamp plot. After obtaining the lamp, he wishes to become Sultan and the most powerful sorcerer, before being tricked into becoming a genie and trapped in his own lamp.
The character was voiced by Jonathan Freeman in the 1992 animated film and was loosely inspired by earlier vizier and sorcerer figures from Aladdin traditions.
