In a traditional quinceañera, the celebrant’s father commonly presents her first high-heeled shoes.
This symbolic presentation is often called the changing of the shoes. The celebrant may begin the event wearing flat shoes, and her father replaces them with high heels. The gesture represents a transition from childhood to a more mature stage of life.
The custom is especially associated with formal family celebrations, but it is not universal. Some families have another relative perform the presentation, while others omit it or adapt it to the celebrant’s preferences. Comfortable footwear, low heels, or symbolic shoes may be used instead of traditional high heels.
The shoe ceremony is separate from the religious service, the waltz, and the presentation of other symbolic gifts. It is one of several traditions that families may combine, modify, or leave out when planning a contemporary quinceañera.
