A ball gown is the garment most commonly associated with the honoree at a traditional quinceañera.
The formal dress usually emphasizes the celebratory and ceremonial character of the event. It may have a full skirt, fitted bodice, decorative fabric, embroidery, or other features chosen by the honoree. Colors and styles vary widely, and contemporary dresses may be inspired by current fashion rather than a single traditional pattern.
The ball gown is sometimes compared with a bridal gown because both can be elaborate and formal. A quinceañera dress, however, does not signify marriage. The celebration marks a fifteenth birthday and a family-recognized transition into a new stage of life.
Dress customs are not mandatory. Some honorees choose a shorter dress, a modern evening gown, cultural clothing, or a less formal outfit. The ball gown is the conventional association, not a universal rule.
