A waltz commonly opens the formal festivities at a traditional quinceañera.
The waltz is usually performed by the quinceañera with members of her court, often called damas and chambelanes. Depending on the family’s choices, the dance may also include her father or another honored relative. Choreography can be highly formal, rehearsed for weeks or months before the party.
Modern celebrations frequently add contemporary music and choreographed group numbers after the formal waltz. Those newer performances do not erase the older symbolism: the opening dance presents the honoree to family and guests in a ceremonial setting. Customs differ, so a waltz is common rather than mandatory at every quinceañera.
