In a traditional quinceañera, the honoree’s formal ceremonial title in Spanish is quinceañera.
The term identifies the girl or young woman whose fifteenth birthday is being celebrated. In Spanish, the feminine ending is important: quinceañera refers to the female honoree, while quinceañero can refer to a male equivalent or to a boy celebrating a similar milestone in some contexts.
The word comes from quince, meaning “fifteen,” and the suffix -añera, which relates to years or age. In English-language communities, quinceañera is also widely used for the entire celebration, not only for the honoree.
The honoree may be accompanied by a court of honor. Members of that court have separate titles, such as dama for a female attendant and chambelán for a male attendant. Those terms describe participants around the honoree, not the central celebrant herself.
